UHD’s Sanders event claim runs into a venue mismatch
The allegation raises a public-funds question, but UHD’s Walk2Vote listing and Sanders’ Houston event page name different venues.
Libs of TikTok accused the University of Houston-Downtown’s Student Government Association of holding a Bernie Sanders campaign event, in a post dated Oct. 27, 2026. The post says university symbols are visible behind Sanders. It also says student government symbols are visible. The post calls the event an alleged violation of Texas Government Code Chapter 556. It also says the event violates University System Policy 02.A.391. The charge turns on whether public university money, facilities or official authority went to a candidate.
The account also copies Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on the post.
The university’s own announcement describes a different event: UHD’s Oct. 16 notice says Walk2Vote, an annual student voter drive, starts on the South Deck at 1 p.m. on Oct. 20 with lunch, entertainment and voter information before participants walk to the polls. The university’s event listing names the Student Government Association as one of four co-hosts2. An event page titled “Fighting Oligarchy: Get Out the Vote with Bernie Sanders in Houston” lists an Oct. 20 Houston event at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. The venue listings place the events at separate locations. State law and UH System policy bar universities from using funds they control to support candidates for office. UH System policy 02.A.39 applies the same bar to System and university funds, including any use that supports candidates for Texas or U.S. government offices3. The policy allows political activity in university facilities on the same terms as for other outside groups, subject to use fees.
Ask UHD and the Student Government Association for the Walk2Vote funding and the co-host records, and ask the UH System Office of Human Resources, which is responsible for policy 02.A.39, to confirm that no campus space or staff went to a campaign event.
