Trump vows real consequences for fraudsters stealing from taxpayers
Trump’s linked video describes prison terms and personal liability for officials who ignore fraud; the proposed penalties still require congressional approval.
In an Oct. 28 post, the White House promised “real consequences” for fraudsters but identified no specific enforcement action. The post opens by declaring, “The Trump Administration is PROTECTING American taxpayers.”1
The post names no enforcement action, no mechanism for imposing consequences, and no official responsible for them2. Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are the programs working families count on, which makes this promise a matter of household security. The video linked with the post says prison terms rise with the amount stolen: "The more you steal, the longer you'll stay in that prison3."
Those penalties exist only as a proposal. On October 3, 2026, Trump called on Congress to pass legislation addressing fraud in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Semafor reported that the White House sent draft legislation to House and Senate leaders, with at least 20 years in prison for violations involving $100 million or more. The draft would also bar courts from placing those sentenced on probation or suspending their sentences5. Trump's video says state and local politicians could be held liable: "if a state or local politician knows about fraud and has the ability to stop it, but does nothing about it, they can be personally liable for the full loss of the American taxpayers' money4."
Diya TV reported that the proposal requires congressional approval and enactment before its provisions could take effect6. Semafor reported that Congress was unlikely to pass the legislation in its post-election session after the midterms5. The White House’s post promised consequences1 but identified no specific enforcement action2.
