Parents should control children’s care; El-Sayed won’t rule out blockers
On Oct. 29, El-Sayed called a question about excluding puberty blockers from his universal plan hypothetical, leaving Michigan parents without a clear commitment.
Michigan families should take Abdul El-Sayed at his word: when Saagar Enjeti asked him on Oct. 29 whether he would pass universal health care that did not cover puberty blockers for minors, the Michigan U.S. Senate candidate would not say yes1. Enjeti posted the exchange as a question about "his Medicare 4 All plan covering puberty blockers for minors2."
El-Sayed's reply opened with a deflection: "You know, Saagar, that’s a hypothetical, but the question really is, what is government for?" El-Sayed said: “And the question of the kind of health care that you can get is a choice between you, your doctor, and, if you’re under 18, your parent.” El-Sayed said, “To me, it’s not even about culture wars, it’s just about rights.” He also said, “I think there are a lot of people who want to distract us from the fact that our politics have not addressed the material needs of our lives, by trying to make politics about culture war. 1
Michigan News Source reported that El-Sayed described Medicare for All this way: “I think you need to guarantee health care for everyone, cradle to grave, without premium, copay, deductible. That’s how. That’s Medicare for All.”3 His platform says: “Healthcare decisions should be made by a patient (and their parents if they are a minor) and their doctor–no one else. That includes reproductive and gender-affirming care. 4
His platform includes gender-affirming care
El-Sayed's campaign platform sets the scope in writing: "I will fight to expand Medicare to cover all necessary healthcare, including vision, dental, and hearing, and extend it to every single American from cradle to grave without premiums, copays, or deductibles." The same page says the decisions it protects include "reproductive and gender-affirming care4."
It goes further, opposing "the use of lawfare or funding cuts to stop healthcare providers from providing full-spectrum healthcare4." VOZ quotes him saying Medicare for All "should cover all health care," adding, "that includes gender-affirming care5."
A plan that covers everything, names this care, and rejects any funding cut leaves no room for an exclusion. The question was never hypothetical; it was about his plan as he wrote it.
Parents must direct their children’s care
No one else, except the taxpayer who pays for it.
Under a single federal plan with no premiums, the mother who refuses puberty blockers for her own daughter still pays for them for other people's children. Parents have every right, and good reason, to resist puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones. A seat at the table means little when the federal government has already decided the menu.
His answer leaves coverage unresolved
He saw this question coming years ago. In a podcast VOZ quoted, he predicted that conservatives would raise sex-change surgery under Medicare for All as "the prime example" in the debate5. If he knew the question was coming, why does he still have no answer?
Michigan voters can demand a clear answer
His platform says he would fight to guarantee health care for every American. Michigan voters can hold him to three answers.
Would he vote for a Medicare for All bill that expressly excludes puberty blockers for minors, yes or no? Would he exclude cross-sex hormones for minors, yes or no?
Would he let Congress cut federal funding to providers who perform sex-change procedures on children, yes or no? Until he rules out coverage for puberty blockers for minors, Michigan families should take his cradle-to-grave coverage promise at face value.
