Marriage, family and legacy define the American Dream
Heritage’s October 15 post calls marriage, starting a family and building a legacy the American Dream; its family page urges policies that encourage family formation.
Marriage and family formation are central to the American Dream; Heritage’s October 15 X post calls getting married, starting a family and building a legacy the American Dream. The Heritage Foundation's X account posted that message on October 15, 2026, and the claim it carries goes to the household first.
Heritage’s family page says America’s future depends on families1. If the household is the foundation, then the American Dream depends on whether the family holds, and that is the stake every parent and every policymaker inherits.
Heritage says the weakening of the family has produced a loneliness, commitment and demographic crisis that endangers both the American Dream and America's place in the world. Heritage's answer is public action, and its page states the demand plainly: Conservatives can no longer stand by as the American family breaks down. Heritage says it seeks an America where a husband, his wife, and their children are protected by law, encouraged by government, and supported by societal institutions1.
A 2019 American Principles Project report found that 74 percent of married respondents disagreed that marriage is outdated. That view was also shared by 51 percent of never-married respondents and 46 percent of cohabiting respondents. The APRB Survey included 5,285 Americans. Respondents were ages 20–652. It was fielded November 9–15, 2018.
Family Brief's position is that public policy should end marriage penalties in tax and benefit programs and raise the child tax credit, so that marriage and children are rewarded rather than penalized.
