WNBA Faces Eligibility Dispute as Engelbert Prepares to Leave

Engelbert says the decision is hers, but the next leader will take over as the WNBA’s eligibility debate continues and its April draft approaches.

The Daily Wire reported that WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, speaking to the Associated Press, would step down at year’s end; she said the decision was her own and cited the collective bargaining agreement, media-rights deal and expansion as reasons the timing was right.

Rules for women’s league

The leadership transition comes amid an unresolved question about eligibility in a league whose agreement says only women may play but does not define the term or explain how eligibility is determined1. The next commissioner inherits that gap.

The eligibility dispute

Kanter Freedom and White’s declarations challenged the league’s definition of a woman. Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White declared themselves women and eligible for the 2027 draft, challenging the league’s definition1. On the same day, Engelbert sent teams a memo.

The Daily Wire reported that the WNBA’s August meeting of team presidents and general managers on how to define a woman ended without agreement. A league spokesman said there were no immediate eligibility matters and said discussions with stakeholders would continue1. The same statement denounced what it called “bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others.”1

Engelbert’s tenure

Engelbert said she expected to serve three and a half years but stayed seven and a half1. During that time, the league expanded from 12 to 15 teams2.

The search and draft

Engelbert said the league would consider internal and external candidates3 for her successor. NBA commissioner Adam Silver, to whom the WNBA commissioner reports, said the league offices were interviewing search firms2. The draft is set for April4. Families should watch who succeeds Engelbert and whether the league defines “woman” before the draft.
