Hindustan Times framed the video as a response to President Donald Trump’s public remarks about Somali immigrants in Minnesota. The outlet said Frey sat with a few Somali people at the restaurant to show appreciation for Somali culture, and placed the visit amid a welfare-fraud controversy. Hindustan Times also characterized the visit as part of a public-relations campaign by Tim Walz, Frey and other state Democrats to repair the damage from the fraud scandal. Frey pledged that Minneapolis police would not cooperate with federal immigration raids targeting Somali neighborhoods, and said the city “stands with” its Somali residents2.
