James Cody Bryant is a man accused of helping plan school killings
After a Seattle judge denied Bryant bail, Billboard Chris condemned The Globe and Mail for describing the accused school-attack conspirator as a woman.

"A man pretending to be a woman is called a man," Billboard Chris wrote on X on Oct. 14, answering a Globe and Mail headline about James Cody Bryant. The Globe and Mail’s Oct. 13 X post carried this headline: “Woman who allegedly aided Tumbler Ridge shooter to remain in custody pending further court appearances.”2 Chris's post said it was "a man, not a woman, who aided in the murder of schoolchildren1." On Oct. 13, a U.S. judge denied Bryant bail, Global News reported3.
The federal complaint says the Feb. 10 attack at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School killed a staff member and five children4.

The complaint charges Bryant with conspiracy to murder people in a foreign country and alleges the conspiracy with Jesse Van Rootselaar ran from August 2025 until about Feb. 10, 2026. It alleges that on or about Aug. 8, 2025, Bryant advised Van Rootselaar on attack locations, writing that "Wide open spaces means numbers." It says Bryant helped test the livestream Van Rootselaar planned to use and told her it looked "solid." And it says Bryant sent $14.33 through PayPal for a lighter intended for an explosive device4. At the bail hearing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg told the court that Bryant had been in daily communication for months with "someone who was planning a mass murder event in British Columbia." The judge said internet communications would make release conditions hard to design and enforce, and voiced concern about keeping monitoring abreast of technology3.
The FBI agent's affidavit puts the ages of the five children killed at the school at 12 and 134. Those are children in a classroom, and the complaint alleges the person now detained spent months helping plan their deaths.
Global News reported that Bryant was ordered detained until further court order3.
