Illinois District Must Tell Parents Who Shares Their Child’s Room
Liberty Justice Center's October 14 demand says District 128’s rules let student consent block parents from learning who shares their child’s overnight room.
District 128 must restore parents’ authority over overnight arrangements: on October 14, 2026, Liberty Justice Center’s PARENTS Initiative sent the district a demand letter alleging that its policies allowed at least one male student to share overnight accommodations with female students while withholding that information from parents. The Daily Signal reported Tyler O’Neil’s account on October 19, 2026, quoting the policy copy provided by Liberty Justice Center: “students will be assigned to rooms with students of their same gender identity”2; Liberty Justice Center says the policy bars disclosure of roommates’ biological sex to parents without student consent and says parents receive participating students’ chosen names but have no way to know whether their minor child will share a room with an opposite-sex peer1.
Parents should not have to accept transgender ideology as the rule governing their daughter’s sleeping arrangements.
“Parents have a fundamental constitutional right to direct the upbringing of their children—that includes knowing who their child is sharing a room with on an overnight school trip.”
The letter also quotes the Gender Support Guidelines: staff “should not disclose information that reveals a student’s transgender status to others unless authorized by the student and documented in the Gender Support Plan.”3
The district’s published guidelines call for a school climate that “respects, values and fosters understanding of gender identity.”4 Respect for students does not authorize withholding the facts parents need to approve an overnight trip.
Cosgrove, counsel for Liberty Justice Center’s PARENTS Initiative, states the principle plainly: “Parents have a fundamental constitutional right to direct the upbringing of their children—that includes knowing who their child is sharing a room with on an overnight school trip.”1
A parent’s permission should cover the actual arrangement, not an arrangement described in terms that conceal biological reality. School officials can treat every student with dignity while preserving separate sleeping spaces for girls and boys. Why should another student’s permission determine whether parents can assess their own child’s accommodations? The family’s authority cannot depend on that veto.
Liberty Justice Center demanded written assurance that District 128 would begin amending its policies3. The center also demanded staff notification and training1.
Schaffer should commit in writing to sex-based overnight rooms and disclosure that lets parents make informed decisions. Parents should demand the revised language before approving a trip. District 128 must amend these rules, train staff to follow them, and enforce parents’ authority rather than a student-consent veto.
