At a September 15 meet at Camas High School, Garrett and Retzlaff walked about five meters after the starting gun and then stepped off the course, Clark County Today reported. Garrett said spots and scholarships at larger meets were being taken away from girls. Retzlaff argued that biological sex gave the Camas runner an unfair advantage: “A biological boy is biologically different than a female and that is an unfair advantage.”1 Retzlaff said the protest was meant to show the girls would not stand by while the Camas runner competed in the girls’ race.

Retzlaff said the Camas runner finished seventh in the girls’ race and would have placed about 60th in the boys’ race. Brandi Kruse’s October 14 post said, “Nearly half of the girls cross-country team in Camas, Washington, just forfeited their race”3. Clark County Today names two runners, Garrett and Retzlaff, as the Skyview athletes who stepped off the course1.
