Georgia should keep its heartbeat law. Bottoms wants it repealed.
Bottoms’ repeal pledge would erase Georgia’s heartbeat protections and reverse state support for mothers who choose life, making the governor’s race a direct choice for families.
Georgia should keep its heartbeat law. Keisha Lance Bottoms has made plain she would repeal it1. SBA Pro-Life America posted on Oct. 27, 2026: “Keisha Lance Bottoms would undo Georgia’s protections for unborn babies.”
SBA Pro-Life America says Bottoms has promised to veto any new limits. Bottoms would reverse both.”1
SBA Pro-Life America quotes Bottoms’ June 2025 Instagram post: “As Governor, I will veto any attempts to further erode our reproductive freedom.”2 The governor’s race decides whether that line stands.
Georgia protects unborn children after cardiac activity
The line is concrete. Georgia’s law bans nearly all abortions once fetal cardiac activity is detected, which experts say happens at about six weeks of pregnancy, AJC reporter Riley Bunch writes. It has already survived the courts: the Georgia Supreme Court reinstated the law in 2024 after a lower court attempted to block it, Bunch reports3.
The state’s commitment does not end with the child. SBA Pro-Life America says Georgia also funds programs that assist mothers during pregnancy and after birth, including support for pregnancy resource centers2. Georgia protects the child and stands behind the mother who carries him.
Bottoms promises Roe-era abortion protections
Bottoms has said this herself, more than once. AJC reports that she supports repealing Georgia’s abortion restrictions, commonly known as the heartbeat law. The same AJC item says she would work to restore the abortion-access protections that existed under Roe v. Wade4. At a debate among three leading Democratic candidates before the primary, Bottoms and the other two said they would repeal the heartbeat law, WSB-TV reported5.
She casts the issue as privacy. As Atlanta mayor, she told Variety that “a woman’s health care decisions should remain between her, her doctor and her maker,” according to SBA Pro-Life America2. That sentence has no room for the child whose heartbeat Georgia’s law recognizes. Repeal would not leave anything between a mother and her doctor. It would strip away the protection the state’s highest court put back in force.
Her plan targets pregnancy resource centers
Repeal is only the start. SBA Pro-Life America says Bottoms’ campaign health care plan pledges to “Repeal Georgia’s abortion ban, protect safe access to clinics, and crack down on deceptive crisis pregnancy centers that mislead patients and delay care.”
A governor who promises to “crack down” on them is going after those mothers and the people standing beside them. SBA says Bottoms has been endorsed by EMILY’s List, Planned Parenthood Action and Reproductive Freedom for All2. Planned Parenthood knows which candidate it wants holding Georgia’s veto pen.
Jackson backs the law’s exceptions
Republican candidate Rick Jackson stands on the other side. AJC reports that he supports Georgia’s current law, including its exceptions for rape, incest and cases where the mother’s life is at risk4. AJC reports that Bottoms supports repealing Georgia’s abortion restrictions, while Jackson supports the current law.
Georgia families should take Bottoms at her word. Parents and pro-life voters should back the candidate who defends the heartbeat law. Legislators should keep funding the programs that carry mothers through pregnancy and after birth. A child’s heartbeat deserves a governor who will protect it.
