Discord rolls out age checks after privacy backlash
Discord is rolling out age checks to all users after delaying the launch over ID concerns; a 2025 vendor breach exposed government IDs belonging to 70,000 users.
Discord is rolling out age-verification measures to all users, PCMag reports, after delaying the launch when users raised concerns about having to provide government IDs1.
Discord says its verification tools identify an “age signal” without sending users’ names, IDs or facial scans to the platform. The company says it vets vendors through privacy and security reviews before data processing and requires them by contract to handle data in specific, limited ways. The company says the checks help it comply with child-safety laws in various countries1.
A breach at one of Discord’s third-party vendors exposed government IDs belonging to 70,000 users in October 20251, PCMag reported.
Discord says it sorts users using signals such as account age and activity, not messages or profile data. Users can challenge an incorrect designation through facial age estimation, an ID scan, a credit-card check, AgeKey, or age-range data from Apple or Google app stores. Teen accounts will face restrictions such as blocks on sensitive images and limits on interactions with strangers1.
Discord says more than 90% of users will not have to verify their age directly2.
Discord says it trained the model using reliably confirmed data from regions where local laws already required age assurance, linking user behavior to age. Discord says its machine-learning model learned patterns in how typical 15-year-olds and 30-year-olds use the service to predict whether an account belongs to an adult or teen. The estimate therefore means Discord expects automatic assignment for most accounts, rather than a direct age check for every user2.
CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy said age-assurance laws are expanding and cited launches in Brazil and Texas2. Families should watch how these requirements shape privacy protections and safeguards for young users.
