Bill Maher warns the left that affirming young children costs votes
The April 27, 2026 Club Random exchange resurfaced in an October 7 X post, where Maher argued that children this young cannot make the decision alone.
The argument that followed was about children as young as eight and nine1, and about who answers for them.
The conversation took place on episode 219 of Club Random with Bill Maher, published that day2. It was a 1-hour-53-minute episode billed as a conversation about cancel culture3, and it landed on something far closer to home for parents. Months later, an X post dated October 7 carried a transcript of the exchange4.
The core of it has not aged. Maher challenged Cross’s account of how the parents were responding.
Maher’s case is plain common sense: children this age do not run these decisions themselves. He told Cross that if a child of eight or nine is transitioning, then someone else is making it happen. He pressed the point on judgment, asking when an eight-year-old’s judgment has ever been off4.
Then he named the political price, and he named it as one of Cross’s own voters. His prediction: ordinary voters hear this and side with him. His summary of where that leaves the country: “That’s America in a nutshell.”4
Republicans already learned that lesson the hard way. In 2020, Trump’s campaign stayed away from these issues and lost; in 2024, he made men in women’s sports central and won. If a comedian who votes with the left can hear how this sounds to a parent, why can’t the officeholders who write the policy? Those who defend affirming grade-schoolers are on defense, and one of their own voters just told them why.
Maher is no lonely dissenter. Opposition to medical transition procedures for minors is not a niche position. Pew Research Center surveyed 5,097 adults in February 2025. It found 56% favored banning health care professionals from providing “care related to gender transitions for minors.” The shift reaches into the left’s own coalition: 35% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents now support making it illegal, up from 26% in 20225.
On that closer question, Maher predicted that voters would land where he did: eight-year-olds cannot make these decisions on their own1. For lawmakers, that makes this a live family concern, not a fringe fight.
The same Pew survey found 66% of adults favor requiring trans athletes to compete on teams matching their sex at birth5. Gallup's May 2025 poll put it at 69%. Gallup also found support for teams matching gender identity has fallen 10 points among Democrats, to 45%, and among independents, to 23%, since 20216. Those surveys ask about clinics and sports teams, not about a third-grader's clothes and name at home. But they mark where the left's own voters are moving, and it is the ground Maher is standing on.
Cross’s position deserves a hearing in his own words, because his words show how far out of step it is. Cross says his daughter has transgender friends in third grade, including one he thinks had just turned nine and describes as “girl to boy.”1
That concession is the answer. Cross said the child’s parents were buying boys’ clothes, and Maher said that meant adults were doing something. It is a parent’s decision, made for a child. Treating a grade-schooler’s say-so as settled is an extreme position. Responsibility for a young child rests with the child’s parents, and the child’s own declaration cannot stand in for it. None of this is an argument against Cross’s friends or their children, who are caught in the middle of an adult debate.
Family-first policy starts where Maher’s common sense did: a child that young cannot carry this decision alone7, so the adults answerable for that child must be the parents, not a school, a clinic or a trend. Cross says the parents are “just agreeing with” the child; parents must remain responsible for guiding their children, and they have every reason to resist puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones.
No one needs to win over David Cross. The polling above points to a clear political opportunity. That is the opening for lawmakers: protect children from sex-change procedures, put parents first, and make parental rights the winning issue it already is.
