Kansas parents should judge Adam Hamilton by the church he built

Family Brief Staff

Two days before Kansas voters choose a senator, Townhall’s video captures a pastor on staff praising a children’s drag story hour and describing the church’s practices.

Kansas parents should judge Adam Hamilton by the church he built and still leads, not by a debate answer alone. Townhall’s Nov. 1 X post Townhall’s Nov. 1 report identifies Lydia Kim as pastor of connection and care at Church of the Resurrection1 and Townhall reports that Kim said, “Our pastor is currently running for Senate as a Democrat.... This is the church that he built.”

Townhall’s X post quotes Kim saying Urban Abbey got a bomb threat and that “we as a church” sent money to help with security. Threatening a church is indefensible. Parents can condemn threats without endorsing drag events for children, and Kim endorsed this one1.

“We’re part of Pride Fest every year!”

Lydia Kim

Kim’s account describes the church’s recurring practice, not a single remark. She said, “We’re part of Pride Fest every year!” She also said, “We do queer weddings here. We did them before when we weren't supposed to.”1

At the Oct. 21 Senate debate against Republican incumbent Roger Marshall, Hamilton said he believes “there are two genders, male and female.” Asked about boys in girls’ sports, he invoked his granddaughter: “I don't want biological men or boys competing against her that could harm her. That's not a fair fight.” On who sets the rule, he said “local organizations should be determining that issue,” rather than the federal government2. Local control names who decides. It does not say the decision must protect the girls’ category.

Hamilton’s strongest answer is about kindness: “That looks like caring for people who are picked on and bullied.”2 Children should not be bullied, including children struggling with their identity. Girls are owed fair competition grounded in biological reality, and that protection cannot depend on which organization happens to decide. Compassion does not require leaving parents to fight the rule organization by organization. Will he defend girls’ eligibility rules when an institution chooses otherwise?

The debate came less than two weeks before Election Day, and Kansas voters decide the race Tuesday, Nov. 33. Before they vote, Kansas parents should put three questions to Hamilton, and each one needs a yes or no. Will he support a federal rule that keeps boys out of girls’ sports? Will he tell parents whether his church should keep celebrating Pride Fest and queer weddings? Family Brief’s position is plain: men and boys should not compete in women’s and girls’ sports, and parents, not institutions, direct their children’s upbringing.
