Wisconsin must protect children from sex-change procedures. Crowley rejects limits on current care

Family Brief Staff

The next governor will decide whether Wisconsin protects girls’ sports, parental consent at school and children from sex-change procedures.

Wisconsin’s next governor should protect children from sex-change procedures, and Democratic nominee David Crowley told Wisconsin Watch, “I am not going to limit our LGBTQ community from what they currently have.”

Wisconsin Watch asked both candidates: “Are there any rights that transgender children and adults have currently that you would seek to limit, such as access to gender-affirming care?” Crowley told Wisconsin Watch: “No, I am not going to limit our LGBTQ community from what they currently have. We have a job in making sure that we protect our LGBTQ community, that we protect all children in this state, to where they can live and be their healthy selves, no matter where they are. And so, you know, I'm always going to be an accomplice when it comes down to the LGBTQ community and making sure that we're protecting their rights and their ability to live healthy lives in Wisconsin.” On Oct. 22, Moms for Liberty posted his answer on X. Crowley told Wisconsin Watch: “No, I am not going to limit our LGBTQ community from what they currently have. We have a job in making sure that we protect our LGBTQ community, that we protect all children in this state, to where they can live and be their healthy selves. And so, you know, I'm always going to be an accomplice when it comes down to the LGBTQ community.

Crowley went on: "I'm always going to be an accomplice when it comes down to the LGBTQ community1."

Protect them from what, if nothing that exists today is up for limiting? If current access stays exactly as it is, what does a parent's objection change? A mother in Milwaukee or a father in Mauston has now heard the Democratic nominee's answer in his own words, and the word "accomplice" is his.

Evers vetoed five family-protection bills

That answer is where Evers's vetoes lead. In March, Gov. Tony Evers vetoed five Republican bills, Wisconsin Watch reports2.

They included a ban on transgender children and college-age individuals playing on school sports teams that matched their gender identity. They included a bill requiring parental consent before a school changes a student's name or pronouns. They included a bill ending sex-change procedures for minors2.

Crowley’s answer promised no limits on current access, not whether he would sign these bills. The next governor decides whether those bills become law.

Tiffany backs limits for minors

Republican Tom Tiffany answered the same question with a limit. "Public money should not be used for that, including for adults, and it should not happen to minors," he told Wisconsin Watch2.

He added that he would restrict funding to medical facilities that offer surgeries to minors2. That is a line drawn at minors, with a refusal to pay for what crosses it, and a family can hold him to it.

Parents should demand clear protections

Early in-person voting began Oct. 20, and Election Day is Nov. 32. Parents have that long to put plain questions to both candidates and to get plain answers.

Will you sign a bill that ends sex-change procedures on minors, yes or no? Will you sign a bill that protects girls' sports, yes or no?

Legislators who share these views should send the bills back and make the next governor answer for the choice. A child belongs to a family before a school district or a hospital system, and a governor who will not say so has told parents what they need to know.
