Parents deserve answers from medical groups on sex-change procedures for minors

Family Brief Staff

HHS has renewed its demand that six medical groups explain their guidance on minors’ sex-change procedures, putting parents’ questions about evidence and accountability in focus.

  • HHS is right to demand answers about child sex-change procedures: on October 15, 2026, researcher Leor Sapir flagged the department’s “final demand” that medical groups state their positions on the evidence and its 2025 report1.

The Washington Examiner reports that HHS asked the organizations to provide evidence supporting their guidance on hormonal or surgical interventions for children and say whether they plan to revise their standards; the letters require a response within 10 business days. The Washington Examiner reports that HHS had already asked several leading organizations for clear positions and planned revisions before Wednesday’s letters renewed the request. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said medical organizations that set standards for children’s care “have a responsibility to explain the evidence behind those standards” and that “Parents and clinicians deserve transparency, and we expect these organizations to provide it.”

Bloomberg Law identifies the recipients as the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, Endocrine Society and World Professional Association for Transgender Health. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. called the letters a “final request” for policy updates in light of an HHS report, Bloomberg reports2.

Each organization should identify which sex-change procedures it recommends for minors, the evidence supporting those recommendations and any changes it plans. Parents deserve an answer from each group in its own name.

The HHS review examined 17 systematic reviews covering psychotherapy, social transition, puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries in minors. HHS concluded that harms from sex-change procedures are significant, long-term and inadequately tracked3.

Parents have the right and good reason to resist puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for their children. Medical organizations should equip parents to scrutinize recommendations, rather than expect families to defer to professional authority.

The letters did not specify consequences, Bloomberg Law reports2. Parents and public officials should insist on substantive responses regardless.

Which evidence answers HHS’s findings on harm? Will their guidance change? Each group should answer plainly so parents can judge the recommendations affecting their children.
